Edenbridge Galleries in Kent currently hold a beautiful marquetry commode attributed to Ince & Mayhew.

The top has a beautiful centre piece, with a Tudor rose surrounded by what could be feathers amazingly executed to give a sense of depth.  There is a shallow drawer at the top with a vitruvian frieze, which opens  to reveal a mirror on a ratchet and a number of small compartments, some lidded.  The curved cupboard doors open to reveal three graduated drawers.  The back of the cupboard doors have been strengthened with bands of mahogany, which look fresh as they have not been exposed to the light.  The front of the commode is decorated with foliate marquetry depicting acorns and oak leaves tied with ribbon.  The bracket feet look a little clumsy, and may have been shortened.

It is not known who the commode was made for, but it has a curved back so was probably made to fit into a particular room.   The workmanship is of the highest quality and it was a great pleasure to spend time with the piece.  The asking price is £75,000.
